JAMMU: Intensifying attacks, Pakistani troops again violated ceasefire on Tuesday by resorting to mortar shelling and firing on Army posts and civilian areas along the LoC in three areas of Noushera sector in Rajouri district.
“Pakistan Army has started indiscriminate heavy shelling on the LoC at Jhangar, Kalsian and Makri areas of Nowshera sector,” a senior police official said here.
According to the official, the shells have fallen close to civilian areas.”Indian Army has been responding appropriately and no loss of life has so far been reported
“Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked firing in three areas of Noushera Rajouri district from 05:15 hours today,” Defence Spokesman Col Manish Mehta said.
They fired mortar bombs, automatic weapons and small arms, he said, adding that Indian troops gave a befitting reply.
There has been five ceasefire violations in over 24 hours along the Line of Control (LoC).
On Monday, Pakistani troops violated ceasefire four times and restored to heavy firing and mortar shelling in Saujian, Shahpur-Kerni, Mandi and KG sectors in Poonch district, injuring 5 civilians, including five women.
Several shops were burnt down after a shell triggered fire in oil containers at a security force camp.
Pakistani troops had also violated the ceasefire on September 2 by firing on forward army posts along the LoC in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district.
All these firing incidents have taken place after the Uri attack by Pakistan that killed 19 people.
Last year, 16 civilians were killed and 71 others were injured in 405 brutal incidents of cross-border firing by Pakistan.
As part of measures to beef up overall security, the border guarding force has also reviewed the preparedness and situation of security mechanisms along the eastern front with Bangladesh so that terrorists are not capaable of using that country to sneak into India and launch any kind of attack.
“No doubt, the overall vigil has been increased (along western borders). All the defence and security forces establishments are on their highest alert in light of recent happenings”, a BSF official said.
“There is a certain tension on the western border… we are having active engagement (with Pakistan) at the Line of Control and we are receiving shelling from the other side. However, we are in a supportive role at the LoC (to the army),” BSF Director General KK Sharma stated. (PTI)
