JOWAI: There will be no immersion in River Myntdu this year, the West Jaintia Hills district administration has decided.
The decision was taken in consultation with the Jowai Puja Committee to avoid water pollution. “As per the decision, the puja committee will not immerse idols in the Myntdu. Instead, they are making a special 8x8x4 feet cast iron tank that will be filled with water. The idols will be ceremoniously immersed in the Myntdu at Syntu Ksiar but will be immediately taken out for further immersion in the iron tank,” DC Arun Kurmar Kembhavi said.
The water in the tank will then be allowed to drain into a soak pit. “None of the puja materials will be thrown into the river. The cost of the tank will be borne by the DC office under the Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign,” Kembhavi said.
This is the first of its kind in the State and the district is showing the way in protection of environment. “We hope that with this initiative, we will send a positive signal to all puja committees in Meghalaya,” said the DC.
