Nokma body approaches East Garo Hills DC
TURA: The Joint Nokma Association on Land Acquisition- NH-44 comprising of Nokmas from six akinglands namely, Samanda, Rongakgre, Megagre, Dilmagre Ampanggre and Rongalgre have urged the State Government to speed up the payment of compensation to landowners who were affected by the construction of the recently completed NH-44.
In their complaint to the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, the joint nokma body stated that many people had parted with their homes, agricultural lands, tree and bamboo plantations and other valuable assets to make way for the construction of the national highway on the assurance that fair compensation would be given to them during the construction of the project.
The Nokmas rued the fact that so far, there were no signs of the government initiating the process for the payment of compensation although the construction company concerned had already completed the project.
In addition to those affected by land acquisition, the association claimed that large portions of agricultural lands belonging to other residents of the area have been rendered useless due to the dumping of mud or siltation.
Informing that a meeting to strongly pursue the issue was recently held at Megagre Village, the Nokmas urged the Government to effect the payment of compensation to the affected landowners under the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 latest by January 1 2017.
