Electrocution deaths in Mawphlang

SHILLONG: A week’s time has been set for the magisterial panel to complete its probe into the death of six members of a family, including a pregnant woman and a seven-month-old baby, from electrocution in Mawphlang block.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills DC and chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority P.S Dkhar said, “Magisterial inquiry into the incident has been ordered. The probe will be headed by Mark Challam, BDO and Extra Assistant Commissioner. The BDO’s task is to inquire all aspects of the incident and submit a report.”
On the interim compensation to the victims’ kin, Dkhar said, “We will be able to examine it only after the inquiry report is submitted.” 35-year-old Prisdalin Shangpliang, and her five children were electrocuted last Thursday. According to police, the incident was caused reportedly due to leakage of electricity from the nearby transformer. MeECL is also conducting a separate probe into the incident. The UDP has called for action against the negligence of those concerned.
