SHILLONG: The city police have rescued two dogs and arrested one person for allegedly trying to kill the canines. After some people reported that a man, identified as Ropeklien, was trying to kill two dogs for meat in the city, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India sprang into action and together with the police and Stray Animal Rescue Society (SARS) stopped the killing. Tee Mawlong, cofounder of SARS, filed an FIR under Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and Section 11(1)(a), (d), (e), (l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Former DGP S.K Jain appointed SP (City) Vivek Syiem as the nodal officer in the case and Danny Kharbani, the head constable from the crime branch, for the operation. The police seized a knife, a sack that had blood stains and a blow torch used for removing fur during a raid in Madanrting where the two dogs were also found. The animals are with a volunteer and recovering from the trauma. Sources said the accused has a history of killing up to 10 dogs in a week
