SHILLONG: The state youth wing of the KHNAM has condemned the Centre’s decision to celebrate Christmas Day as ‘Good Governance Day’.
Thomas Passah, KHNAM youth wing president, said the BJP’s move “is an outright harassment of Christian minorities in India”. “This decision of the BJP reveals that it has close relationship with Hindu fanatics – the (RSS),” he said. The representatives must unanimously criticise the decision.”
The party has urged public servants, schools and colleges to defy the BJP’s move and said that the silence of the State government with regard to the issue has emboldened the Centre to go ahead with the proposed celebrations.
By-poll campaign
The KHNAM may have fielded only two candidates for the district council bye-election on December 13 but the party is all set to begin its campaign from Tuesday.
Passah, who is also the secretary of the KHNAM central election committee, said campaigning will begin at 11.30am from Markasa and move to Kynshi and other areas within the jurisdiction of Mawthadraishan.
KHNAM has fielded candidates for two seats so far – Pyndap Marshillong from Mawthadraishan and Bankhraw Sing Kharbuli from Laban.
All regional and national parties have fielded candidates for the seven vacant seats – Nongspung-Sohiong, Nongkrem, Rambrai-Jyrngam, Mairang-Nongkhlaw and Amlarem, Mawthadraishan and Laban.
