SHILLONG: There was more cash in the polythene bags abandoned at Ramakrishna temple in Laitumkhrah than what was first estimated by the Ramakrishna Mission authorities. After the final counting, it was found the surplus amount was over Rs 1.5 lakh.
The cash was seized on Friday and subsequently the same was deposited in the SBI main branch. The money will go to the Centre’s treasury.
When initially counted, the bundles of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 abandoned at Sri Ramakrishna temple on the Ashram campus on November 12 was Rs 60,02,500.
However, an official source said on Friday that after the final counting of the cash following the seizure from RKM by the Income Tax officials, the total amount was Rs 61,57,500.
When the amount was taken to SBI, one fake currency note of Rs 1,000 was detected. With the reduction of Rs 1,000, the total amount deposited in the bank was Rs 61,56,500.
Ramakrishna Mission may not have counted the cash properly leading to the surplus amount, the official source added.
“Now, the notes have been properly counted and verified,” a bank official said.
It took the whole day for the entire process to be completed by the Income Tax officials.
Though the process is over, it still remains a mystery as to who donated the demonetised currency notes to the Ramakrishna Mission.
