Man City midfielder Toure admits to drink driving
MANCHESTER: Though Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure did not admit that he “intentionally consumed alcohol”, the Ivorian footballer has pleaded guilty to drink-driving, it was reported on Tuesday. The 33- year-old was “above the permitted limit”, and did not challenge the charge. He was fined 54,000 pound (around $68,707) — a means-tested fine — and banned from driving for 18 months by Barkingside magistrate. “It is well known that I am a Muslim and do not drink. I have always refused alcohol,” Toure was quoted as saying by BBC. In his statement, Toure added: “Drink-driving is a serious crime and even though I was not intentionally consuming alcohol I accept the ban and fine and I would like to apologise for this situation.” The former Ivory Coast international was recalled to the Manchester City squad earlier this month after apologising for “misunderstandings” relating to comments made by his agent Dimitri Seluk on club head coach Pep Guardiola. India U-17 team lose 0-1 to Orlando City in Brazil
NEW DELHI: India started their campaign in the Atletico Paranaense U-17 tournament on a bitter note as they went down to US-based club Orlando City SC 0-1, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Tuesday. India earned an early corner riding a bright start with Ninthoi coming close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute on Monday, AIFF said in a statement here. Both teams went into the change-over goalless. In the 47th minute of the game, Orlando found the back of the net from a blistering counter-attack. Towards the end of the game, Abhijit, Joysana and Shubham Sarangi were introduced by coach Nicolai Adam to find the equaliser – – but in vain. India will face tournament hosts Atletico Paranaense on Wednesday. Meanwhile, sidelined by injuries since the Champions Trophy in London earlier this year, young India striker Mandeep is desperate to impress the national selectors with his showing in the ongoing men’s Junior Hockey World Cup here in a bid to earn his place back in the senior side. Since then the 21-year-old striker from Surjeet Singh Hockey Academy has been in and out of the senior side because of injuries and dip in form. (Agencies)
