SHILLONG: The need to promote U Soso Tham’s works at the national and the international levels was felt on the Khasi poet and philosopher’s 76th death anniversary on Sunday.
Munish Singh, regional director of ICCR, said Soso Tham, as a poet, goes deep into society and this shows his greatness. “The simplicity of his poems and the way he expresses things so easily and deeply is amazing,” he added.
Singh observed that the name of U Soso Tham is an institute in itself and said one would be acquainted with Khasi culture and literature if one read his poems and books.
“I request family members and others to see on how to popularise and promote the legendary poet at the international level. In that venture, any kind of support from ICCR will definitely be looked into,” Singh, who was the chief guest at a programme in the city, said.
He also informed that he has read the English translation of Ka Duitara Ksiar (The Golden Duitara) by Madeline Tham.
T Silbi Passah paid tribute to the poet by staging a short play on the life of Soso Tham based on Ki Symboh Jingpyrkhat. In an infusion of culture, the Red Oleanders performed a Hindi song paying tribute to the bard followed by a song and dance performance. This was followed by a soulful rendition of Benedict Hynniewta’s flute that enthralled the audience.
