Road accident claims one
SHILLONG: One person died after a Mahindra pick-up dashed a scooty and three pedestrians at Araimile, Tura.
Police said that the incident happened on Saturday morning around 8.30 pm, when one Mahindra pick-up (ML-08D-8276) driven by Marcus Hajong, dashed against a scooter ridden by one Lunarson G Momin and knocked down three pedestrians, Sengcheng T Sangma, Balkan Ch. Marak and Tresinath T Sangma at Araimile, Tura (WGH).
As a result, the rider of scooty and pedestrians sustained injuries and were removed to Civil Hospital Tura, where Lunarson G Momin succumbed to his injuries.
Unclaimed body

JOWAI: A female body which was recovered by Umkiang Police in East Jaintia from Rattacherra roadside on Wednesday last remains unclaimed morgue at Khliehriat CHC.
According to sources, the body resembled a non-tribal woman of unsound mind who was often seen roaming Khliehriat-Rattacherra area.
Umkiang Police requested the relatives to come and claim the body before it will be disposed off as per law.
Fine imposed
SHILLONG: The Court of L. Kharshiing, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Shillong vide an order dated December 15 convicted three accused, Deepak Kumar Paul, Abhijit Ghosh and Rahul Ghosh, who were booked by Sadar PS in a non FIR case under the Meghalaya Police Act. Accordingly, the three accused pleaded guilty and were fine Rs. 5000 each.
Online fraud
SHILLONG: One Md. Hasim lodged a complaint that on December 14, unknown persons fraudulently made online shopping worth Rs. 45,998 by using his debit card.
Fair price shop accused of withholding ration

TURA: A fair price shop in a village in West Garo Hills has been accused of withholding foodgrain and fuel distributed under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and the PHH scheme for November and December.
The villagers at Rengsan Wadrogre said the deputy commissioner released monthly quotas of rice, sugar and kerosene between November 5 and 6 but those did not reach the BPL BPL families there.
The villagers further alleged that the rice that is being distributed at 3 Kg per family is sold at Rs 5 per kg instead of Rs 3/kg.
The affected families have urged the deputy commissioner to initiate an inquiry into this.
Shillong Manipuri students urge Govt to end deadlock
SHILLONG: The Shillong Manipuri Students Association has asked the Manipur government to ensure normalcy and unity among the ethnic communities of Manipur by taking impartial and politically unbiased action.
In the context of violence in Manipur, the Association said that while Manipur belongs to the people of Manipur, it is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-lingual democratic state.
“ The Government of Manipur must take both short term and long term actions to educate the people of Manipur this historical realities and challenges”, the Associations said.
According to the students’ body, the demand raised by different ethnic groups must be democratically discussed and resolved.
“No violence must be used by both Government of Manipur and People’s groups”, it said.
Mrs Ri Bhoi contest to highlight crime against women,children

Nongpoh: To showcase the talents of women of Ri Bhoi District as well as to raise awareness on the rising crime against women and children, the Women Organisation of Ri Bhoi District (WORD) will organizing the first ever, Mrs Ri Bhoi 2016 on January 28 at Umsning Playground from 4:00 PM onwards.
President of WORD, J Kylla, while informing media persons on the event, said that the contest was initially scheduled for December 30, but due to unavoidable circumstances, it was rescheduled to next year.
Meanwhile, Kylla invites and request all women from Ri Bhoi District especially from remote areas to participate in this event.
