Cost-effective interventions to promote organic farming in State
SHILLONG: The Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with ‘Billions in Change’, has organised a two-day training programme that began on Monday.
Held at the Integrated Agricultural Training Centre (IATC) in Upper Shillong, the programme focused on introduction of innovative compost-making.
Programme Trainer James Turner, a permaculture specialist from the US, said since natural energy source is exhaustible, there is a need to find an alternative for sustainable development.
“Organic composting is one of the tools that will help create a productive system for farmers and the society in general,” he said.
P.S Kumar, commissioner and secretary in the Agriculture Department, said the motive of the two-day programme is to train field officials so that they can support farmers. He also said cost-effective interventions will help promote organic farming in the State.
The programme was attended by officials of the departments of Agriculture, Community and Rural Development, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary and others.
The first day of the programme was on theoretical knowhow about innovative compost-making through power-point presentation followed by an interactive session.
The second day of the training programme will focus on practical exercises.
