TURA: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a farmers’ market complex and integrated training and social mobilisation centre at Doldegre village near Tura.
The Chief Minister said foundation for the two separate programmes was laid together due to paucity of time. “This shows the rapid pace of development being undertaken by the Government,” he said.
Four markets at Doldegre, Chokpot, Betasing and Mawrynkneng, “which are being designed to meet the aspirations of the people”, are underway, Sangma said.
“Doldegre is going to be the heart of all developmental activities and that in turn will allow natural expansion of Tura town,” he added.
Stressing on the importance of organic products, the Chief Minister said there was a plan to expand organic cultivation and obtain organic certification for the State. He also expressed his concern for the problems faced by the effects of demonetisation in the farmers’ group and requested the Deputy Commissioner and other district officials to extend all possible help.
Among other dignitaries present at the function were GHADC Chief Executive Member Denang T. Sangma and other council and district officials, besides the Nokmas.
Jebeline R Sangma, Joint Director of the Agriculture department, Garo Hills, said the proposed market complex will allow farmers to sell their products without middlemen’s intervention and help them exchange technical information.
The Rs 12.69-crore G+2 market project plan will have 130 rooms, including an auction platform, cold storage and open room for holding conference and other functions.
