SHILLONG: A delegation of FKJGP central body met Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department Minister HDR Lyngdoh to demand the resumption of the weekly health monitoring of livestock that are brought from other states.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, FKJGP general secretary Dundee Cliff Khongsit said, “Health check-up of livestock should be conducted so as to make the meat products fit for consumption.”
Stating that the State government should come up with a law to ensure that the livestock brought in is fit for consumption, he said, “The State government should initiate legislation through the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department to conduct health check-up of livestock and those who oppose it should be dealt with firmly.”
When asked about cattle smuggling to Bangladesh, he said that it is the duty of the customs officials to check the same even as the organisation will keep a close watch on the situation.
Khasi Jaintia Butchers Welfare Association stopped purchasing cattle from Khanapara after the KHADC and the Hima Mylliem suspended the health check-up of cattle.
