TURA: The banned GNLA outfit, which is already reeling from a string of surrenders of its senior commanders and cadres, has suffered another setback on Wednesday afternoon with the surrender of two senior cadres with sophisticated weapons in East Garo Hills district.
GNLA militants Pinesh T. Sangma (28) alias Mikbrak and Tenang R. Marak (24) alias Ansang surrendered before East Garo Hills police chief Davis Nestell R. Marak at Rongjeng police station around 4.30pm.
They both handed over an AK-56 assault rifle each and 250 rounds of ammunition, four magazines, a hand grenade and 10 demand note pads of the outfit.
Both Pinesh, who is from Albelapara village under Mendipathar police station in North Garo Hills, and Tenang, who is from Mandanggre) village in Sibbari region of South Garo Hills, belonged to the fifth batch of GNLA recruits who underwent training in the Durama Hills.
The surrender of the duo along with weapons is expected to deal a major blow to GNLA chief Sohan D. Shira who, over the last six months, has lost several dozen weapons and cadres.
