TURA: Several Garo Hills NGOs like the GSU, CEC, FKJGP (Eastern Circle) Williamnagar and ICFS, Williamnagar have submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of Public Accounts Committee Paul Lyngdoh demanding an inquiry into the sub-standard construction of a residential school building at Kalak under Samanda Block in East Garo Hills.
The construction of the school is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
A visit to the under-construction school building by the NGOs recently revealed the absence of proper lintel and use of sub-standard bricks and cement in less proportion leading to cracks on the walls.
What has alarmed the NGOs is the fact that such poor construction was carried out in an earthquake prone zone.
Raising safety concerns of students and others in the vicinity, the NGOs demanded that a spot inspection be conducted and direction be given to the concerned department to dismantle the building and re-construct the same by following proper safety norms.
