TURA: A day after the influential Garo Students’ Union announced a call for three nights of road blockade in the north Garo Hills region to protest the delay in construction of a major road link, the organization has withdrawn its protest reportedly after a meeting with the district administration and the company engaged with the road construction.
“A meeting was called on Tuesday by the district administration between the road construction firm M/s C.C.L International Ltd and our union over the delay in completing the Mendipather-Songsak road during which the firm representatives in a joint statement gave an assurance than work would progress in full swing from March 1st, this year. Hence we are withdrawing the blockade with immediate effect,” announced the GSU leader Landslord Ch Momin from North Garo Hills.
The student organization, an influent pressure group in Garo Hills, had raised objections to the alleged delay in the completion of an all important road link between Mendipather in North Garo Hills which was awarded to a construction company.
The road was to connect Medtipather all the way to Songsak via Nangapara but the alleged delay in the project has raised many an eye brow with blame game on the state PWD and the company alloted the work by the state government.
“The company has assured us that it would begin progress on the road project as early as March 1st. In this regard we have decided to postpone our protest,” informed Bintu Sangma of the GSU on Wednesday.
The proposed blockade called over North Garo Hills would have severely affected the movement of goods and public transport to other districts of Garo Hills, particularly West, South, South West and East Garo Hills districts which are connected to the northern region
