SHILLONG: Irregularities in the appointment of jugalis (helpers of linemen) by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) have surfaced as over 100 existing casual jugalis were left out in the process though they had passed the physical test.
Sources said on Wednesday that according to the notification of MeECL, as many as 772 candidates were declared to have passed the physical test and personal interview.
The irony is that the candidates will be appointed in three phases thereby allegedly violating the reservation policy.
Since there is only one advertisement for 772 posts, there should have been a single merit list, but three phase wise merit lists defeat the purpose of appointment, the sources added.
The first phase includes names of 306 candidates, while the second and third phases have 233 names each. The break-up of the merit list for the 772 posts is open category (166), Khasi-Jaintia (309), Garo (309) and other tribes (38).
The glaring aspect of the merit list is that in the open category, the names of only one or two non-indigenous persons figure indicating alleged manipulation.
Officials of the concerned section of MeECL were not available for comments.
