SHILLONG: UDP MDC HS Shylla has demanded a CBI probe into the alleged misappropriation of Rs 36 crore for the construction of 20km road from Wahkaji to Mawthabah.
In a statement issued to the press on Monday, Shylla pointed out that when the zero hour notice was tabled during the recent KHADC’s Budget session, most of the MDCs, who participated in the debate wanted a CBI inquiry into the matter.
Taking a dig at the Executive Committee of People’s Democratic Forum (PDF) headed by P.N. Syiem, Shylla  said that the MDCs were silenced when he said that CBI had already questioned him with regard to the road project .”When my name figured, the Executive Committee had ordered a CBI inquiry and now, fearing that their personal interests would be exposed, they have decided to constitute an independent enquiry instead,” he said.
Shylla added that during his tenure as CEM, the expenditure was only Rs 5 crore for the road construction, while the money used by his successors was Rs 31 crore. “With the Rs 5 crore, we were able to construct a road near Mawthabah but the bridge was not constructed yet. Vehicles can ply till Mawthabah,” he said.  On the last day of the Budget session, the KHADC Executive Committee decided to institute an independent inquiry pertaining to all aspects of the construction of the Wahkaji-Mawthabah road undertaken by the KHADC.
