SHILLONG: The manager of Marvelene’s Inn, Edmund Kharir, who was arrested on February 10 in connection with a 14-year-old girl’s rape, is still in hospital.
It is not yet known whether any medical board has asked Kharir to stay under observation for a particular illness. But sources in the civil hospital said a doctor regularly checks on him.
Kharir’s over a month-long stay in the hospital has raised suspicions and many are questioning the privilege he is enjoying for being the manager of the guest house run by the family of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, sources said.
Recently, the Home minister said in the Assembly that no one would be spared while the case is being investigated by the police.
Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights,
Meena Kharkongor, had earlier called for the formation of medical boards to testify cases where accused persons often get themselves admitted in hospitals to avoid arrest and interrogation and subsequently delaying investigation.
In another similar case involving a minor, Sordar of Mawryngkneng Peter Lawai was arrested for abetment. Immediately after arrest, he had complained of ill-health and was admitted in civil hospital.
Soon after his arrest, Kharir was taken to civil hospital after complaints of ill health.
However, Kharkongor pointed out that there was a need on the part of medical experts to examine and confirm whether the arrested persons are suffering from illness.
