SHILLONG: The State BJP leadership went full steam ahead on Monday in denouncing the Congress for being corrupt and not doing enough to ensure safety of women in the State.
With the promise of cleansing corrupt politics in Meghalaya, BJP’s State president Shibun Lyngdoh, while addressing a gathering at Ichamati on Monday, said the people of the State should “give BJP a chance”.
More than 1,000 gathered at Ichamati where the party’s first big banner rally took place on Monday.
David Kharsati, general secretary of the party, said, “We are committed to serving people and will bring in development. Our promises will be translated to reality.”
Asserting that the Congress has beguiled voters into money power in tribal areas, he said, “Why did the BJP win? It is because people in plain areas are wise.”
The party’s success in the recently concluded Assembly elections in four states, including Manipur, has boosted the morale of its leaders in Meghalaya, where the ballot battle will start next year.
The BJP president said, “BJP will bring clean politics in the state. The motto of BJP is to serve the nation first, then comes the party’s priority and self development is last.”
Talking on rights of various communities, Lyngdoh said genuine Indians will be given their rights, be it Bengali, Koch, Nepali and other communities.
He asserted that the mushrooming of NGOs and rise in militancy in the State is due to unemployment.
Taking a dig at the ‘dynastic politics’ of Congress, Bianca Kyndiah, state president of Mahila Morcha, said, “BJP is not a one-man show. It does not belong to a certain family politics. It is a party for the people who wants to serve the society.”
Ridiculing the sitting MLA from Shella, Donkupar Roy (UDP), Kharsati said, “Doctor ka naam, shaitan ka kaam (his name is doctor but he does evil work).
BJP member from Shella constituency Jropsing Nongkhlaw said, “People living in the border areas are having trouble as trade facilities have closed down. BJP will ease marketing facilities, better health services and better road connectivity.”
He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the transformation of India just after two-and-a-half years in the government.
Meanwhile, pointing to the rising figures of crime against women and children in the State, Kyndiah said the State is not taking any action to tackle the crime.
HDR’s resignation demanded
Demanding Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s resignation, she said, “It is heartening to see that the Home Minister did not owe any moral responsibility. If he cannot provide necessary security to women and children, he should resign from his post.”
“The law is very weak. We want security for women and children and if we allow the same government to rule the state, noting will materialise,” she added.
