TURA: The two day protest call given by a conglomerate of Garo organisations to demand action against police personnel who opened fire on civilians at Resubelpara ended peacefully on Friday evening with no untoward incidents being reported from any part of the five districts.
In comparison to the first day of the protest where most parts of Garo Hills remained shut, Friday was far different with more shops opening for trade and people coming out on the streets.
Government offices had a better attendance with many departments having 90 per cent of its employees attending to their duties.
In Tura, more shops opened up for business at Chandmari, Ringrey, Hawakhana and the main market as traders made brisk business.
Williamnagar town was the most affected by the protest call as people stayed indoors and many offices registered low turnout in attendance. Shops also remained closed.
The ongoing police recruitment at Mendipather college in North Garo Hills also saw a large turnout of the youth eager to join the security force.
“The number of young men who turned up for the recruitment was very high. Only a few did not turn up,” informed district police chief D P Marak.
Meanwhile, the six persons detained by police for enforcing a closure at Tura and Dalu on Thursday were released after being reprimanded the same day.
Leader of the Garo Hills State Movement committee (GHSMC) Balkarin Marak was among the six who were detained by police for attempting to forcibly close shops and business houses.
