NONGSTOIN: The decomposed body of a young woman that was found near the Umpniang River in West Khasi Hills on Sunday has been identified by her family.
The woman, identified as 22-year-old Daritngen Syiem, was from Siejlieh village.
Sources said the family of the deceased woman contacted Nongstoin police after it came to know about the wristband that had the name ‘Nisha BN’ on it.
The woman’s relatives were then taken to Nongstoin civil hospital where they confirmed her identity. The body was handed over to the family.
The woman’s brother last saw her in February.
When asked why no missing report was found, the family said the woman would often visit her father at Boko in Assam and so her disappearance did not raise suspicion. Her father left the family after Daritngen’s mother died in 2005.
The Nongstoin Police have asked the family to cooperate in the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Seng Samla Shnong of Siejlieh condemned “the barbaric act” and urged police to speed up the investigation to find out those who are involved in the case.
