TURA: The NPP leadership on Thursday accused the State Congress of plotting the coup in the GHADC to topple its Executive Committee.
“The main reason for orchestrating the rebellion was because our NPP alliance had passed a landmark bill that would benefit the Garos. This was engineered by one particular politician who had opposed the bill since it went against his interests,” NPP leader and legislator James K. Sangma told The Shillong Times.
Sangma said the moving of the no-confidence motion before passing of the provisional budget for the GHADC was a severe blow to the autonomous body.
“The entire list of business was cancelled after the resignation of the CEM and his EC. This was engineered by the Congress that has proven that it has no concern for the financial well-being of the district council,” said Sangma. He alleged that hectic horse trading had taken place to split the ruling party in the GHADC.
Echoing similar views, ousted CEM Denang T. Sangma said the budget could not be passed because of the sudden political developments.
“Under my leadership I had managed to pass this very important Customary Law Bill despite opposition from some elected members because we are looking at the future of our Garo society,” said the CEM.
