Nongpoh: Opposing the Centre’s decision to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with 29 ethnic organisations including, ABSU, AASA and many others on Saturday took out a mass rally in Guwahati.
AASU president, Dipankar Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, advisor Sammujal Bhattacharya and other leaders led the rally.
Addressing thousands of students at Latashil ground on Sunday, AASU warned that they would never compromise on their decades-long demand of detection and deportation of illegal migrants who infiltrated to the state from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.
They also demanded strict action against the culprits involved in the attack on AASU office at Silapathar.
Nath said that there is no room for illegal Bangladeshi nationals, both Hindu and Muslims in Assam.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which has been tabled in Parliament by the Narendra Modi government, proposes to grant citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
According to AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, several other organisations including Purvottar Marowari Sanmilan, Purvottar Hindustani Sanmilan, Purvottar Hindustani Yubak Samaj and All Assam Bhojpuri Yuba Samaj have extended support to the rally.
