SHILLONG: Three members of a family from Jirang village in Ri Bhoi district, who were hospitalised in critical condition after consuming wild mushroom last week, are showing signs of improvement, the Health Department said on Thursday.
The family comprising of Hebron Syiem (24), Lariamon Doloi (18), Rasim Lakhmi (38) and Trilawin Doloi (35) had consumed the wild mushroom on April 3.
While Lariamon Doloi died from poisoning, the three others were admitted in Shillong Civil Hospital in critical condition the next day.
Lariomon was a mother of two children – a one year old child and the other just a month old.
A relative of the family informed that the mushroom was commonly consumed in the village. It was a 12 year old boy who had collected the wild mushroom but had not consumed the mushroom.
The relative added that the mushroom they consumed is usually found in the month of June-July which is the sprouting season, but fate had other plans which led the family to harvest the mushroom from the forest at an inappropriate time.
Sources from the Health Department have said that awareness at the district level with regards to mushroom consumption is necessitated in view of the harmful health effects and deaths from mushroom poisoning.
