MD of Pala Construction in police net
JOWAI: The Managing Director, Pala Construction Private Limited, Ioanis Pala was arrested from Shillong and brought to Jowai on Wednesday evening. Pala was absconding since May 2013 after duping customers of several lakhs of rupees. Several people had invested in a non banking entity floated by Pala. Earlier a complaint was filed against Pala and his marketing manager and police had registered a case under section 406/420/34 against both the accused. West Jaintia Hills Police in August, 2013 had also placed a reward to any informer who can provide information about their whereabouts. The Pala Construction Private Limited is a private company formed on May 24, 2012 and registered at Registrar of Companies, Shillong with its head officer at Bliss Complelx, 2nd Floor, Lad-stadium, Ladthadlaboh Jowai.

Cattle smuggler apprehended
SHILLONG: BSF troops deployed at Gunjangpara, South West Garo Hills apprehended a Bangladeshi national Md. Rubal Rana (19), while he was trying to sneak into the neighbouring country along with the smuggled cattle. Rana, a resident of Sherpur in Bangladesh, revealed that the cattle was brought from Purakhasia market in South Garo Hills and was supposed to be handed over to a smuggler in Bangladesh. He claimed that he worked only as carrier and earned Rs 1,000 per assignment.

Coal miner killed by dacoits
JOWAI: A person identified as Indra Bahadur Gurung was murdered by a group of 7 to 8 miscreants who came to his thatched house to commit dacoity at Umshong in East Jaintia Hills on Tuesday night.Sources informed that Gurung, working in a coal mine within Umshong village was with his wife Savitri Gurung inside his hut at around 8:30 pm when a group of unidentified miscreants armed with pistol and machete forcibly entered the hut and asked him to take out all valuables including cash. “When he denied, one of the miscreants hit him on the head with a machete killing him on the spot,” sources said. According to police, Rs 5000, three mobile phones besides gold ornaments were snatched away from the both the husband and wife.

Shnongpdeng closed for 2 days
JOWAI: Shnongpdeng, a tourist destination in Amlarem Sub-division, will remain closed on Friday and Saturday on account of the annual general meeting of the Dorbar Shnong.

FKJGP demands inquiry into illegal collection at weighbridge
JOWAI: The FKJGP, Jaintia Hills District unit has demanded proper inquiry in to the alleged illegal collection of money from truckers transporting limestone, builders and coal to Bangladesh by officials of the Transport Department and by the staff of Amsarin Weighbridge. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, with copies to the Chief Minister, Transport Minister and Chief Secretary, the FKJGP alleged that those who man the weighbridge along with officials of the DMR and staff of the Transport Department have violated the NGT order by allowing trucks to carry load beyond the permissible limit. The FKJGP also said that while huge amount of money as fine was imposed on drivers no receipts were issued to them, “which clearly indicates that the fine imposed is being misused without the knowledge of the Government.” The Federation has threatened to take the matter to the Court if there is no inquiry into the issue.

WKH to address public grievance through WhatsApp
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has informed that the district administration will facilitate addressing of public grievance on WhatsApp. Anyone having any complaint can drop a text message, an audio message or a video message on WhatsApp to this special BSNL number +91 94363 94363. “The complaints may pertain to delay in obtaining various certificates, localities not getting electricity/water etc. If any citizen comes across a poor quality mid-day meal being served in any government school she/he may attach a photo of the meal and send it to the number. The same applies to substandard works in any government project,” a statement said. The complaint message will be forwarded to a closed group called “DCC WKH”. For those who do not have smartphones, can directly send an SMS at the BSNL number. For those who want to lodge complaints through Facebook, The District Administration has an official Facebook page, “Deputy Commissioner Nongstoin”.

College teachers stage protest
SHILLONG: College teachers in the State joined their counterparts across the country in observing ‘Demand Day’ on Wednesday to put pressure on the Centre to publish the 7th UGC Pay Review Committee’s report and National Education Policy. Members of the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association wore black badges as a sign of protest and held meetings at their respective colleges on Wednesday against the alleged indifference of the Centre towards their pending demands.
