SHILLONG: The Mendal unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) apprised the Government of its failure to repair the damaged Rajing Bridge located at Chisim Akanang under Bajengdoba PWD (roads), North Garo Hills.
The bridge was damaged due to overloading trucks which were carrying the bricks to Samkalakgre in the last three weeks.
GSU had contacted officials inthe department concerned as well as the contractor and made an appeal to repair the timber bridge at the earliest. But the request was in vain.
This is the main bridge to A’chotchonggre and Korepara in Samkalakgre area.
“There is no other alternate way to these areas. Due to this damaged bridge, commuters and students of that particular area are facing a lot of hardships,” GSU said in a statement.
According to GSU, most of the students of that particular area namely A’chotchongre, Samkalakgre, Korepara, Rajinggre, Akanang, Mangdalpang area are coming to Gokol, Mendal and Bajengdoba for education.
But due to the non-repair of the bridge, the students cannot attend classes.
“Not only students, teachers, parents, businessmen and daily wagers are also facing the same problem,” GSU said.
The repairing of the dilapidated bridge could be done in five or six days, but nothing was done for the last three weeks, GSU said and appealed to the authorities concerned and the public representative of Bajengdoba constituency to look into the matter at earliest.
