SHILLONG: The state unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday sought the intervention of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Director in-charge of Distribution into the non-availability of power in Kut village in Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills.
Expressing concern over the alleged discrimination meted out to the people of the village, many of whom had been deprived of electricity for a year now, AAP’s legal cell secretary Peter A Dohkrut said despite the ordeal the villagers are still served with electricity bills. “We will be forced to take the matter to the court if it is not resolved soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sohra MLA T Chyne called on the MeECL Director following reports of inflated bills served by the corporation.
The MLA alleged that some households were served with bills as hefty as Rs 40, 000.
Among the affected villages are Laitryngew, Mawkma and others.
“The consumption of electricity by the residents will not be more than Rs 1000 as most households do not use power line but it is surprising to see that even domestic light bills come to around Rs 3000 (a month),” Chyne said.
The Director assured the MLA to implement the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP) and to install transformers in certain villages if necessary.
