New population norms in RTE Act
SHILLONG: The State Government and local authorities will establish schools in areas according to the new population norms in the definition of ‘neighbourhood’ under the Right to Education Act, Education Minister Deborah Marak said on Tuesday. Lower primary schools should be located within 1km of the defined neighbourhood and for the upper level, the distance is 3km, Marak said. “Under Section 6 of the Act, the Government and local authorities should establish schools in areas within the limits of neighbourhood,” she said.

Performance license compulsory
NONGSTOIN:  West Khasi Hills District DC, Arunkumar Kembhavi, has informed to all concerned, especially commercial Establishments, holders of auditoria and organisers of public events to obtain the public performance license from Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) for legitimate usage of copyrighted music in all environments. The DC, in a press statement stated that un authorised usage of copyrighted music would amount to infringement of copyright, which as per-section 63 of the Copyright Act 1957 is an offence punishable by imprisonment up to 3 years with a fine up-to Rs 2 lakhs. Phonographic Performance Limited is a copyright society registered with and enforced by the Government of India to issue such licenses. The local representation of PPL in Meghalaya is Donboklang Dohling, Senior Executive (Licencing).

District Level Road Safety Committee constituted
SHILLONG: The State Government has constituted District Level Road Safety Committee in 11 districts of the State to formulate and implement road safety schemes and measures with immediate effect. This was informed by the Commissioner and Secretary, Transport Department. The Deputy Commissioner will be the Chairman of the Committee with members including the Superintendent of Police, Superintending Engineer/EE PWD (Roads), Associate Town Planner/District Urban Town Planner, Shillong, the District Medical and Health Officers, Inspector of Schools, Chief Executive Member, District Council or his representatives, Chief Executive Officer, Municipal Board and District Transport Officer as Member Secretary. The Committee will meet at least once in 6 months and may invite any other experts in such relevant field as special invitees to the meeting of the Committee. Further, the Commissioner and Secretary, Transport Department, has also informed that the Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department are included as member in the State Level Road Safety Council with immediate effect until further orders.

GNLA sympathiser arrested
SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi police on Tuesday arrested a person for having links with the banned Garo National Liberation Army. The accused Anil Momin was arrested from Pillangkatta area under Khanapara Police station. He had been allegedly providing shelter to GNLA cadres.
Free health camp by
GVK EMRI
SHILLONG: In view of World Health Day, GVK EMRI, Meghalaya operations conducted a one-day free Health Camp recently at Shanti Bhavan, Shillong, a home for the homeless which includes, refugees, mentally ill, abandoned people, and the aged run by the Missionaries of Charity (Congregation of Mother Teresa). As many as 60 people participated in the health camp that had their vitals checked and medical examination done by GVK EMRI team of paramedics headed by ERCP, Dr. Januarius Nongtdu and he prescribed free medicines. The office of the Director Health Service, Meghalaya contributed the medicine for conducting the health camp.

School children to be de-wormed today
SHILLONG: With an aim to intensify efforts towards eradicating STH (Soil Transmitted Helminths), the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will observe the National Deworming Day (NDD) in Meghalaya on Wednesday. The objective of NDD is to de-worm all pre-school and school children between the age group of 1-19 years old through the platform of schools and Anganwadi Centres in order to improve their overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life. The NDD will be followed by a mop-up-day (MOD) on May 10 with the intent of de-worming children, who missed the dose on May 3. All schools and Anganwadi Centres will be the implementation sites of NDD across the District. This was informed by the District Medical and Health Officer, East Khasi Hills District.

BSF organises skill development programme
SHILLONG:  The Border Security Force, Meghalaya Frontier once again started an orientation programme on Skill Development for the unemployed youth of the border area at Mawpat, Shillong. A group of 66 youths including four girls from bordering districts of South West Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills have joined the programme.The selected lot by the BSF will be imparted pre recruitment training on various subjects like, general knowledge, reasoning, current affairs, mathematics, English and Hindi, besides improving physical fitness through PT, sports and games. This is the second batch of youths of bordering areas of Meghalaya State who will be trained under the initiative of Sh P K Dubey, IG BSF Meghalaya Ftr with the help of the State Government, at Mawpat. The IG has urged Meghalaya youth to contribute in nation’s security.

ASWA intimates DC on illegal collection
TURA: The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA), Tura, has alleged that some miscreants are collecting money from the shops in the name of the Association. The ASWA has complained the DC, WGH. In their letter to the DC, the ASWA assured to inform him and the police if these miscreants are found and urged the official not to confuse these people with its members.
