SHILLONG: The accused in the rape of a girl in Ri Bhoi district identified as Tuesday Syngkli hailing from Umkadhor was arrested on Saturday.
Earlier, there were allegations that the traditional heads were trying to hush- up the case by compromise.
The rape victim, who hails from Ri-Bhoi alleged that her family was being forced to withdraw the FIR, which was filed earlier.
In this connection, CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing filed a supplementary FIR on Saturday against the accused.
Both the family and victim were persuaded by the maternal uncle of the victim and threatened by the family of the accused, who went to their house on Saturday morning to make them sign a compromise letter.
The father of the victim was forced to sign a compromise letter, which was written by him, and the family of the victim was told that if they do not withdraw the FIR, a case will be filed against them.
Kharshiing said that had police arrested the accused immediately, the accused would not have gone to the victim’s place on Saturday.
Earlier, the CSWO had criticised the traditional heads of Umkadhor for allegedly shielding the rapist in 2015.
Kharshiing had alleged that the accused had raped the young girl from another village in 2015.
The family of the girl had complained to the village heads about the rape hoping they would hand over the person to the police but it was later hushed up by the traditional heads.
However, the parents of the young girl on May 4 went to file an FIR in Nongpoh Police Station against the accused.
The victim had worked in his house in 2015.
