SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is fielding a political greenhorn from Mawshynrut constituency in West Khasi Hills in the 2018 Assembly elections.
Savio Iawphniaw, the 33-year-old candidate, will contest on UDP ticket and has already toured different villages. He wants to bring about a change to the state.
Iawphniaw, a resident of Riangdo, West Khasi Hills District, has studied in New York City and was in the US for more than 10 years. He devoted his time in studying and working at the same time. Iawphniaw is an alumnus of St Edmund’s School and did his higher secondary from St Peter’s HS School. He left Shillong in 2002 and came back in 2014.
Speaking to a section of the media on why he joined politics, Iawphniaw said that politics will make him understand the plight of the people in the constituency.
When asked on why he chose to contest on an UDP ticket, he observed that the regional party has capable leaders who will lead the people.
Commenting on ‘money power’, he said, “It will not matter much if people don’t vote for me but I have counselled the people that we need a change otherwise we will be stuck in poverty as our representatives have turned a blind eye to the people of the constituency.”
