Sexual assault of minors cause uproar in 2 WKH villages

SHILLONG: Voices of criticisms and condemnations resonated across the streets of Umthied Bynther and Pyndemumiong on Friday at a rally to denounce the incidents that shook two villages at Mairang in West Khasi Hills district.
It may be recalled that a 7-year-old girl was killed on May 7, at Umthied Bynther after she resisted her uncle’s sexual advances. The accused, Balajied Nongrum has been arrested.
Another incident at Pyndemumiong of sexual assault on May 7, against a minor in the hands of three men surfaced. They forcefully pulled her inside an auto rickshaw and then threw her in front of her house after committing the crime.
The three were Raplang Kharmutee (21), Tony Paul Basaiawmoit (22) and Mebanlang Warjri (22). They were subsequently arrested.
Students, parents, NGOs, adjacent villages, scholars took part in the rally, auto rickshaw drivers displayed black flag on as a mark of protest, people carried placards to remonstrate about the rising crimes in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Bernard Syiemiong, Sordar of Pyndemumiong said that the law has to award life imprisonment or capital punishment to the perpetrators of the crime. The Sordar has urged youngsters to be alert and vigilant while making friends and for parents to be responsible for the betterment of their wards.
State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Chairperson, Meena Kharkongor had said that justice will be ensured to the victims.
