MAWKYRWAT: The Khasi Students’ Union in South West Khasi Hills district and the Dorbar Shnong of Nonghyllam village on Thursday lodged an FIR against five police personnel, including a sub-inspector, for allegedly harassing three schoolchildren in an inebriated state.
Forwardman Nongrem, the KSU’s district president, said the incident took place at Nonghyllam village around 4pm on Wednesday. He alleged that the police personnel beat up the school-goers, all below 16 years of age, when they were bathing in a stream near Jingaiti Secondary School in the village.
Nongrem said the cops assaulted the trio without any provocation.
Those who were beaten up are Phaskupar Nongtnger, Manlyness Marngar and Manbha Hahshah, all from the same village.
Nongrem said the KSU members visited Nonghyllam on Thursday and lodged the FIR at the Anti-Dacoit Camp in the village.
“KSU strongly condemns the incident. The law enforcers, instead of protecting people from militants and criminal gangs from across the Indo-Bangla border, are troubling people,” Nongrem said and added that KSU met Deputy Commissioner R. Lyngdoh and demanded that the culprits be punished.
