Morigaon: Police on Sunday rescued a 70-year-old man and his sister-in-law from the clutches of a mob who allegedly tortured them on the suspicion of practising witchcraft at Bhurbandha in Assam.
A section of villagers, after being prodded by a self-declared soothsayer who claimed that the two persons were planing to kill many through black magic, tortured the old man and his 64-year-old sister-in-law on Saturday, police said.
As the news spread, Morigaon district Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Ahom along with policemen reached the spot and rescued the two persons.
A peace meeting was held in the village where the executive magistrate and police officials appealed to the villagers to live in harmony in the area, Ahom said. (PTI)
