Youth president predicts NPP win in 2018
TURA: The National People’s Party (NPP) District Youth from Salmanpara in South West Garo Hills has predicted the party’s win in the upcoming 2018 Assembly Election.District Youth President, Shilbirth Ch Momin said that the absence of Boston who was expelled, would not affect the party and it would win the elections to form the government in 2018.
No medical staff at Diengiei PHC
SHILLONG: The Diengiei Durbar Area, East Khasi Hills, has threatened to agitate if the State Government fails to appoint a doctor at Diengiei PHC (Mawlaingut) within a week.The Executive Committee of the Diengiei Durbar Area inspected the Diengiei PHC on Saturday. It found that the health centre had been without a doctor for a month and only two out of four nurses were present according to the night watchman.In a statement to the press, they expressed shock that the PHC has been neglected for so long.The committee urged the Deputy Director (MI) to appoint a doctor. However, it was informed that the transfer of doctors from the PHCs is the prerogative of the health secretary.
IGNOU centres
SHILLONG: For the first time Kendriya Vidyalayas will be IGNOU examination centres.
In a statement on Wednesday, IGNOU said that the term end examinations will be held from June1 to 21. There are about 6 lakh candidates appearing from across the country.
Campaign for Change organises meeting
SHILLONG: The Campaign for Change (CFC) organised a meeting at Iew Soh or Pynursla market on Wednesday. The meeting aimed at highlighting some of the glaring issues faced by the state. In a statement to the press, KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem, who is also the chief campaigner for CFC was quoted as saying, “We need leaders who are able to frame laws which protect the customs and practices of the minority and the indigenous communities.” Syiem said that there is a need to bring about a change in policies in order to benefit people such as farmers and the youth. He criticized the state government under the leadership of Congress and stated that the government is ‘pro-rich and anti-poor’. Jonah Kharir, leader of the CFC said, “The reason we formed the Campaign for Change (CFC) is because the Khasis and Jaintias are facing problems as the state government lacks in efficient policy making,” adding that there is also lack of development in the educational, employment sector.
Village Dorbar withdraws support for BSF camp
NONGSTOIN: The Village Dorbar of Sohparu village arrived at a decision to withdraw their support to the BSF camp at Sohparu village on Wednesday. This was the result of intervention from various NGOs including the KSU, HYC and the FKJGP. G. Marwein, village secretary of Sohparu village said that after an intense discussion with the NGO leaders, the setting up of a BSF camp would undoubtedly create problems for the residents. Marwein said that he had initially supported the BSF, thinking that they were only taking a survey of the village but has now understood that the proposed BSF camp is not possible as it will create a lot of difficulty to the public especially the women and children. Marwein confirmed that there shall be no continuation of surveys for the BSF camp under the jurisdiction of village.
HSPDP yet to name its candidate
SHILLONG: With UDP, Mylliem circle nominating its candidate for 2018 elections, HSPSDP leader Teilina Thangkhiew has said that it all depends on the UDP-HSPDP alliance whether she would contest from the Mylliem constituency. “It all depends on alliance and the alliance will review and take a call on it,” she said. The alliance so far has not taken a call on whether the UDP should field the candidate or the HSPDP. UDP has selected Hamlet Dohling’s name to the party headquarters as the candidate for contesting in the election.
BSF organises workshop on financial literacy
SHILLONG: BSF, Meghalaya Frontier organised a workshop recently on financial literacy for its personnel at Frontier Headquarters in the city. More than a thousand BSF personnel from various sector headquarters and units attended the programme, which was conducted as part of the social welfare guidelines of DG BSF for personnel serving in remote areas on the international border. P.K. Dubey, Inspector General of BSF, inaugurated the programme. The two-day workshop offered guidance in financial investment, management of money and savings by adopting various safe methods. A series of presentations were given by Varun Malhotra, financial adviser, and Rahul Saini, a consultant from New Delhi.
