Guard wall collapses, NGOs blame contractor
JOWAI: A guard wall of the Ummulong-Khanduli road at Nartiang, West Jaintia Hills, collapsed on Tuesday and the cause of the fall was poor construction works alleged the locals.The KSU and JNC, Nartiang units said the contractor, who constructed the road should hold responsible.“The collapse of the guard wall is due to sub-standard construction and we will lodge a complaint against the contractor with the PWD,” leaders of both KSU and JNC said.
Landslide blocks road
The heavy rainfall caused landslide in the district, generating traffic jam on the Jowai-Chyrmang road on Tuesday afternoon.Villagers from Chyrmang had to walk to reach their village as movements of vehicles have been completely cut off. The PWD has failed to take immediate action to clear the debris and the sources informed that it might take few days to clear the road.
1-day sensitisation programme on earthquake
NONGSTOIN: A one-day sensitisation programme captioned “Revisiting the 1897 Great Earthquake” was organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Nongstoin, in collaboration with the Block Development Officer, Mairang at Khadsawphra College on June 12. The programme covered different aspects of disaster management including emergency method of search and rescue operation, first aid, and mock drill. Training was imparted to the teachers and students of the college on fire safety, first aid and rescue operation besides School Safety Plan and Preparedness. A mock drill on earthquake and evacuation were also organised.
Focus on sustainable traditional farming
SHILLONG: A training and workshop on traditional farming and development of indigenous marketing pathways for sustainability of indigenous farming systems was held recently in the city. The programme, which was organised by the North East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), on Monday focused on sustaining the agro-biodiversity in the North East keeping up with climate change. NESFAS Chairman Phrang Roy Agro-ecologist Dr Francisco Rosado May of the Intercultural Maya University of Quintana Roo in Mexico said farmers have a high level of analyses and understand complex processes though they “present their understanding in easy and simple ways”.
Child Labour Day in Tura
SHILLONG: Bakdil Childline along with Labour Department, DCPU Tura and Students from Mother Angeles Secondary School, Wadanang Tura observed ‘World against Child Labour’ on June 12. As many as 160 people participated in this programme including students, teachers, Labour Inspectors, DCPU staff and childline staff. The theme of this year’s day against child labour is “In conflicts and disasters, Protect Children from Child Labour!” The event was organised by Childline, Tura.
E-Services to be launched in WGH
SHILLONG: The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman District E-Governance Society, Tura in West Garo Hills informed all the citizens that the Office of the Deputy Commissioner would roll out the e-Services in the electronic form to citizens with effect from July 1. Initially, six services would be launched comprising of Issuance of Scheduled Tribe Certificate, Issuance of Caste Certificate, Issuance of Certificate for Recruitment into Armed/ Paramilitary/Police Forces, Issuance of Residential Certificate, Issuance of Permanent Residential Certificate for Higher Studies and Issuance of Income Certificate.The main objective is to facilitate the citizens in availing different services provided by the office of the DC in a transparent and citizen friendly manner.
