SHILLONG: KHNAM has asked the State Government to scrap the railway project in the absence of a strong mechanism to tackle influx.
KHNAM on Monday reiterated its opposition to railway connectivity stating that any such move should be kept at bay till the time the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and cut-off year of 1971 is implemented to check influx of illegal migrants.
“Any talk on railways should happen only after the implementation of ILP and cut off 1971,” KHNAM general secretary Batkupar Wahlang said.
Condemning Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for intending to extend the railway project to Sohra, Wahlang said, “He is adding fuel to fire. It is a provoking statement.” The KHNAM also put its weight behind the anti-railway organisations.
“The ministers in favour of railways should visit Guwahati railway station and see for themselves the number of beggars there. It (rail project) is a threat to the indigenous community,” he said.
Commenting on the ongoing law and order situation, Wahlang said, “The government should call (agitating groups) for talks.
“Arresting people has only caused commotion.”
On the benefits of railway, Wahlang said, “Railways will not benefit the state. Coal from our state will be exhausted if the railways carry goods.”
Another party leader said railway connectivity to Sohra will rob the tourist taxi drivers of their livelihood.
Condemnation
KHNAM also condemned the rampant arrest of KSU members and questioned whether there is any evidence against those apprehended.
“Why blame only KSU members as there are anti-social elements who take advantage of the situation,” Wahlang said.
Demanding the unconditional release of the KSU members, he said, “Rampant arrests will further cause turmoil in the State.”
KHNAM also condemned the statement of the CM that a probe should be conducted into the KSU-HNLC nexus.
“Sangma should instead conduct a probe on his nexus with the HNLC,” he said.
