MAWKYRWAT: A group of miscreants attempted to burn the office of the Employment Exchange at Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills District by throwing a burning gunny bag soaked in petrol inside the office.
South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police H.G Lyngdoh informed on Thursday that according to an FIR filed by the Assistant Employment Officer, Nathanial Thangkhiew, the incident took place on Wednesday midnight.
The curtains in the office room, one plastic chair, electric wires and the office room were partially damaged.
Police have registered a case under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) Act and investigation has begun.
“We are on the hunt for the criminals involved in these illegal activities,” Lyngdoh said while adding that police have not made any arrest so far.
This is the second attempt by miscreants to burn a government office in Mawkyrwat following the outbreak of violent protests against the Byrnihat railway project. On May 27, unidentified miscreants had made a failed attempt to burn the office of the Superintendent of Fisheries at Mawkyrwat by throwing a petrol bomb at the office partially damaging it.
