SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit has rejected the Cabinet’s recommendation for withdrawal of administrator’s rule in the GHADC.
A government source said on Wednesday that the governor declined to give nod to the recommendation.
After the Cabinet on June 15 recommended withdrawal of administrator’s rule in the GHADC, the file related to the matter was sent to the governor for his approval.
Later, the governor returned the file with a query as to whether the chairman of GHADC Boston Marak, whom the Opposition is projecting as the CEM, had resigned from the post.
Though the government replied that the chairman would resign once he files the nomination papers for the post of CEM after the election is announced or he can remain chairman giving option for any of the MDCs supporting his group to become the next CEM, the governor yet again returned the file declining to lift the administrator’s rule in the GHADC.
Earlier, suspended NPP member Boston had claimed majority support to form the next Executive Committee.
The State Cabinet had in April recommended the imposition of administrator’s rule in the GHADC after Chief Executive Member Denang Sangma resigned on March 31 before facing the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress-led opposition.
The sudden passing of the controversial Garo Customary Bill was cited as the reason for the collapse of the NPP-led EC.
The government had said that since the CEM resigned before passing the budget, the administrator’ rule was necessary in GHADC so that the budget can be passed.
Later, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D Diengdoh was appointed the administrator with effect from April 10.
An official source said since the governor did not approve the Cabinet decision to withdraw the administrator’s rule, tenure of the administrator, which will end on July 12, will have to be extended.
