NEHUSU welcomes redressal panel

Shillong: The NEHU Students’ Union has welcomed the university’s move to form the Internal Complaints’ Committee for prevention, prohibition and redressal of sexual harassment cases as per the UGC notification dated May 2, 2016.
The union has been actively pushing for the implementation of the UGC notification and was concerned by the lack of proper internal mechanisms to prevent sexual harassment of students and scholars.
Several cases of sexual harassment were reported in the past, the recent being the alleged harassment of a research scholar by a professor last year.
NEHUSU urged the committee members to serve the interests of the employees, students and scholars of the university irrespective of gender.
However, the union is displeased that the administration failed to officially communicate to the students’ body on the setting up of the committee to which it came to know only when it was uploaded on the university website.
They will closely monitor the functioning of the committee as per the UGC regulation and sexual harassment law.
