Mandsaur: A month after six peasants were killed in police firing during farmers’ agitation in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district, the Congress has organised ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation across the district today.
A meeting has been organised to pay tributes to farmers in the presence of several Congress workers and leaders. However, the district administration has not granted permission in this regard. Heavy security forces have been deployed to deal with any untoward situation.
Congress’ Madhya Pradesh Incharge General Secretary Mohan Prakash, party’s state chief Arun Yadav, Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh and former MP Meenakshi Natrajan today reached Mandsaur for the agitation.
Meanwhile, hundreds of agriculturists under the banner of the Kisan Sangharsh Samanvay Samiti took out a ‘Kisan Mukti Yatra’. Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, Swaraj India Party Convener Yogendra Yadav and former legislator Paras Saklecha were present in the Yatra. However, all of them were forced to halt at Piplia Mandi.
It is being said that hundreds of ryots arrived from Haryana, Punjab and West Bengal to take part in the Yatra.
A stir by tillers in Madhya Pradesh for loan waiver and remunerative prices turned violent on June 6 when six farmers died in police firing. A spate of violence and vandalism ensued in the coming days and protestors torched hundreds of vehicles. (UNI)
