SHILLONG: Assam Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday Meghalaya will have a non-Congress government after the Assembly elections next year.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the programme addressed by NDA’s presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind at Umiam, the BJP leader said the saffron party’s preparations for the 2018 polls “are progressing smoothly”.
“After the presidential election is over, you will get to know about our preparations,” said Sarma, who is the convenor of the BJP-backed North East Development Alliance.
When asked about Congress MLAs and ministers joining BJP, Sarma remained discreet.
The BJP unit in Meghalaya had earlier claimed that many sitting MLAs and ministers from the ruling Congress were willing to join the party but they were not able to do so in view of the anti-defection law.
