Assam flood situation remains grim

GUWAHATI: Flood situation in Assam has turned for the worse especially in eastern Assam areas in North bank of Brahmaputra where water level in several rivers have risen overnight threatening to overtop the highway and bridges at a few places in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district of Assam.

Water level in the rain-fed Kumotia river continues to rise and is now threatening to overtop the bridge and arterial national highway at Samarajan. The flood situation continues to remain grim in Lakhimpur district where flood water of Gabharu river has overtopped the highway at several places besides inundating a vast tract of land and a large number of villages. About a lakh people have been affected by flood in the worst-affected Lakhimpur district so far.

Flood water of Dihiri river has created havoc at Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district where a section of stranded flood-hit has face food crisis.

A massive landslide occurring at Burhapahar under Koliabar subdivision of Nagaon district disrupted traffic on the all-important National Highway 37 for several hours of Sunday morning.

The main channel in Assam valley, the River Brahmaputra continues to flow above the danger mark in at least four places along its course in the state even as flood scene remains grim in Barak Valley in south Assam especially in Karimganj district.
