SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) has called off their strike on Monday after discussions with the new managing director, PM Sangma, officers and union members on Friday, a press communiqué stated.
Sangma assumed charge as MD on Friday. The 13-day agitation that started on June 27 was called by the employees demanding reinstatement of former MD A. Nikhla. The new MD has expressed concern that the strike would cause losses to MTC. This prompted the union to call off the strike. Meanwhile, K. Rumnong, general secretary of MTCWU, said, “We decided to call off as the students are facing problem during examinations.”
The agitation has posed difficulties for tourists and schoolchildren as all services, including interstate and internal buses and railway ticket counter, were shut down.
