Man commits suicide at Mawlangwir
Mawkyrwat: One person from Mawlangwir village in South West Khasi Hills District committed suicide by hanging herself in his own house.  The incident took place on Monday around 1pm, where the victim, Marjuri Marwein (26) from Mawlangwir village hanged himself in his house. The relatives of the victim have urged the Magistrate to give Post Mortem exemption because it is a suicide and the same was provided in which the body was handed over to the family. 

Heavy Rainfall Warning
SHILLONG: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning whereby heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on July 11.

Nongthymmai junction to be expanded
SHILLONG: The State Government under its junction improvement programme will take up the expansion of Nongthymmai intersection, one of the most congested in the city. An official with the Urban Affairs Department said land acquisition for the project is on. “We are hoping that the project will begin by the end of this year,” officials said. The Government recently took up the expansion of Laitumkhrah junction and the project has completed. It also has plans to expand Polo and Motphran junctions.

GSU SZ to picket PWD Dept on July 12, 13
TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Southern Zone, along with its other units from South Garo Hills has announced a two-day office picketing of the PWD Department on July 12 and 13. The office picketing is being held to protest the failure of the department to repair the district’s deplorable roads despite repeated requests and demands being made.

Teachers urge payment of salary via bank accounts
TURA: Teachers under the Garo Hills SSA LP and UP School Teachers’ Association have sought a change in the present system of salary payment to SSA school teachers in which the entire amount meant as salary is deposited in the School Joint Account.In their memorandum submitted recently to the State Project Director, SSA SEMAM in Shillong the teachers alleged that under the current system, certain amounts were being deducted from their salary and other school funds like TLM grants, maintenance grants, MDM grants etc. Besides, the teachers claimed that in some cases, presidents and secretaries who jointly have access to the school joint account are also deducting certain amounts from the teachers’ salary as carrying charges.

Man held for trespassing, assault
JOWAI: One person was arrested on Monday and sent to judicial custody for attempting to strangulate a woman last year. Marlut Lamare of Barato village in West Jaintia Hills was arrested based on an FIR lodged by Pratt Marap (40) of the same village. On October 17 last year, Lamare tried to trespass on her property, assaulted and threatened her and even tried to strangulate her.

Talent hunt by ETV channel
SHILLONG: For the first time in Bengali Television Channel,  a ‘Talent hunt’ for the school students will be organised on July 23  at U Soso Tham Auditorium showcasing dancing , singing, acting, music and instrumentals . The talent hunt programme for the Northeast for the children between the age group of 4-16 years will be telecast in ETV Bangla channel.
“We look forward to explore Northeastern states and special emphasise will be given on the cultural diversity of state like Meghalaya”, a statement issued by ETV Bangla channel. The channel said the purpose is to showcase the local talent in Meghalaya and also give the students a platform in the television industry, where their talents can be nurtured. The platform will be an opportunity to bring forth the culture and heritage of the Northeastern region on national television. Gurupurnima Utsav concludes
SHILLONG: Gurupurnima Utsav spanning over eight days from July 2 to 9 was held with the participation of congregation reminding ancient India’s spiritual heritage. The prayers were concluded on Sunday under the aegis of 57th Acharjya of Nimbarka Sect, Brajavidehi Mohant, Sri Mohant of all India Vaishnavite Sect, Sri Sri 108 Swami Rash Behari Das Kathia Babajee Maharajjee at Rilbong Puja Mandir. The main attractions were Sri Gopal Mahayagna, discourses on Srimad Bhagavatam, Songkirtanam, Prasad distribution, speech by Gurumaharajjee and devotional music.

CM to launch livelihood programme in GH today
TURA: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will inaugurate the programme at Songsak in East Garo Hills on Tuesday morning. The State’s livelihood mission LIFE will supplement the role of the Rural Development Ministry’s National Rural Livelihood Missions — Aajeevika launched by the Central Government in June 2011 as a restructured version of Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojna. One of the most important points of the Livelihood Mission is finding ways at eradicating poverty.
