Illegal teer counters a menace
TURA: The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has raised an alarm over the rapid rise in illegal teer counters in Tura and urged the State Government to deal sternly with the issue. ADE, in a statement issued here on Wednesday, said the State Government’s move of legalising teer for the mere purpose of earning revenue had backfired and that it was losing revenue rapidly due to the presence of a huge number of teer counters operating without valid licences. “Due to these unauthorised teer counters, those with valid licenses are facing losses. The authorized counters acquire licences, pay taxes and abide by the rules of the authority. But the real fruit is reaped by the illegal teer mafias. They contribute nothing to the state and are also for defaulting due payments,” the ADE said. The association also pointed out that most teer counters, whether legal or illegal, operate near busy streets, schools, churches and market places and has strongly demanded that they are shifted to locations where they are least accessible to the common people.
