SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police have issued an advisory to the people of the state to desist from purchasing second hand mobile phones without the original purchase receipts.

The police in a communique on Wednesday mentioned that of late there had been many instances where people were buying second hand mobile phones from unknown people at cheaper rates without verifying the purchase receipt and credentials of the seller.

In most of such cases, it is found that the mobile phones so purchased are stolen items. It is also observed that people are randomly using pre-activated/black SIM cards in their mobile phones intentionally/unintentionally which is illegal.

“General public are hereby advised that if they found any mobile phones anywhere, the same may be handed over to the nearest police station. In case of second hand mobile phones, they should first insist on original purchase receipt  as the person buying stolen mobile phones are liable U/S 411 of the Indian Penal Code and may face imprisonment for a period up to three years,” the communique said.
