SHILLONG: UDP president Donkupar Roy has downplayed the ‘piggyback’ comment of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma linking BJP to regional parties by saying it is Mukul’s usual statement and there was nothing new.
“The people of the State know that the regional parties and BJP are contesting separately and we do not have any pre-poll alliance,” Roy said.
To a question on UDP’s affiliation to BJP-led NEDA and NDA, the former chief minister said it was for the sake of the development of the State and the North East.
Even during the UPA period, several parties had supported the Congress regime with a sole aim of development, he added.
UDP has already embarked on a pre-poll alliance with HSPDP in Khasi Hills and GNC in Garo Hills.
While UDP has only an understanding with NPP, the party has not entered into any pre-poll agreement with it.
