AMPATI: Dairy is the fastest growing sector that can open up several ancillary activities and help in lessening unemployment in the State, said Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Monday after distributing Holstein Friesian cows in South West Garo Hills.
“Dairy farming has evolved with technological interventions and we want to make it attractive and ensure a sustainable model for economic prosperity,” Sangma said while addressing the crowd at the Livestock Mission function in Ampati.
The Holstein Friesian, a Dutch breed known as the world’s highest yielding variety of cattle, were given to five clusters of dairy farmers from Betasing C&RD block in the district. The scheme will help 10,000 families in the State – 5,000 families from three blocks of Garo Hills and 5,000 from three blocks of Khasi-Jaintia Hills. “The government is striving to reverse the trend of rural to urban migration in search of opportunities and ensure livelihood opportunities in their own backyards,” said the chief minister at the function organised by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department in collaboration with the Basin Development Unit, South West Garo Hills.
