SHILLONG: A woman who was hit by a vehicle driven by a teenager on Saturday morning succumbed to her injuries in a city hospital.
Ralbinoda Ramsiej (34) was among the four who sustained grievous injuries in the accident that occurred on NH-44 in Nongthymmai around 7.30am, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem said.
Syiem said a WagonR (ML05 G 0051), driven by an 18-year-old Neelakshi Thakur, lost control and ramped into four pedestrians.
The vehicle was coming from Nongthymmai (NH-44) towards Jingkieng and the driver lost control on reaching United Bank of India near Vespa showroom.
The police took suo motu cognizance and arrested Thakur. A case has been registered against her. The vehicle has been seized.
The three injured persons have been identified as Bitola Suiam (56), Rebina Suiam (36) and a garbage collector, Albert Kharbuli (19).
All the four were walking on the footpath when the vehicle hit them and dragged them into the compound of a house owned by Wansila Kharkongor. The vehicle also damaged the iron and steel gate, a parked car and the walls of the house. According to Syiem, 108 ambulances shifted all the victims to hospital where Ramsiej died. The body was handed over to her family after postmortem.
9-year-old dies in road mishap in Ri Bhoi
A nine-year-old boy who was hit by a vehicle at Umjei in Ri Bhoi on Friday died in a primary health centre.
The accident took place around 8.15 am. The boy, Evenjohn Warjri, sustained injuries and was taken to Kynshi PHC where he succumbed to injuries.
The driver, Thwingdingless Nongrum (36), has been arrested.
In another incident on the same day, a car (ML10 B 4251) collided with a truck (AS25 AC 1257) at Umiam Bypass. Two occupants of the car sustained injuries and were shifted to Shillong civil hospital.
